Baby Yoda. Need I say more?
Yes, yes I do.
The primary reason most people signed up for Disney+ on its opening day, "The Mandalorian" took the internet by storm in its first episode by introducing the universe's favorite creature: The Child.
With only eight episodes for a starting season, somewhat shorter than that of an average first season on cable television, this show had the possibility of hitting two different roadblocks going into its premier. It could have: a) tried to cram too much plot in too little time, or b) fallen into obscurity due to the decline in interest in Disney-related Star Wars material. Luckily, this show managed to break through both of these barriers and delivered unto the world a wonderful, plot-driven story with a very memorable cast of characters and interesting scenarios.
Created by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal as the titular bounty hunter, the show hits the ground running from the word 'Go'. You first see the Mandalorian out on a mission to retrieve a bounty for the Bounty Hunters' Guild. Upon payment, he seeks another well-paying bounty from the Guild's agent Greef Karga, played by Carl Weathers. Karga sends him to meet with a "deep-pocketed" client face-to-face, to keep the details of the new target as quiet as possible. He soon discovers that the client is a ranking member of the disgraced Galactic Empire, seeking a particularly mysterious individual. The Client offers to pay the bounty hunter in a quantity of Beskar, a rare metal that was used to craft the armor of Mandalorians past. He takes the job with a down payment of one bar of Beskar, knowing only where the target should be and that they are approximately fifty years old. And so the journey begins.

After picking up the target, the Child, the story takes the duo to many worlds new to the Star Wars franchise, as well as visiting some previously explored and well-known places. They make some new allies, many new enemies, and the bond between the Mandalorian and his foundling grows to the point where he would lay down his life to protect him, as apparently most of the internet would as well.
To me, this is probably the best on-screen spin-off Star Wars we've yet received from Lucasfilm. The entire production crew had very little to work with and created a fascinating story about some random, unknown bounty hunter in a time that hasn't really been covered by other Star Wars media since the Disney buyout. Sure, Rogue One was a decent film and Solo tried, but neither of them have landed as strongly as The Mandalorian.
In eight episodes, this show managed to pull off a magnificent tale and renew the world's faith in Disney's ability to make Star Wars content. With a slew of guest stars ranging from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star and original voice actress for Disney's Mulan Ming-Na Wen to Revolution and Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, the supporting cast, one-off characters, and even the few series regulars (if that's a thing for an eight-episode season) are astounding and well-deserving of praise.
We can only hope that Kenobi will be as compelling a series, but in the meantime, we've got this wonderful piece of Star Wars lore to sink our teeth into! It definitely justified the subscription to Disney+ for me!
Rating: 5/5 Baby Yodas
