TV Review: "Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Return"

Jonah Ray leads the quirky cast of Netflix's "Mystery Science Theatre 3000".

Some movies are good. Some movies are bad. But there are also movies that are just so bad that they're good. And that is exactly what "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" is all about.

"The Return" is a reboot of the popular MST3K series, featuring new host Jonah (Jonah Ray) and his puppet pals Gypsy, Tom Servo and Crow, who are forced by the evil Kinga (Felicia Day) to experience some of the worst films ever made, aboard the Satellite of Love on the dark side of the moon.

The films are all real and they are quite atrocious, ranging from blockbuster rip-offs such as Atlantic Rim (a cringe-inducing alternate of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim) to original works, such as the cheesy C-grade fantasy flick Wizards of the Lost Kingdom. At this point, you may ask, why would I ever want to invest time in this? And I'll tell you why. It's all about the riffs. The brilliant writing and Jonah and crew's witty, meta-commentary and references during the movies all add up to a delightfully entertaining and hilarious viewing experience, especially with friends. One of my friends recently showed me Mystery Science Theatre 3000 for the first time, and I absolutely love it and couldn't recommend it enough. It's honestly a blast!

Check out "Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Return" and its follwing season "MST3K: The Gauntlet" on Netflix today!

Rating: 5/5

The MST3K crew riff on "Yongary: Monster of the Deep" (1967), a rip-off of the classic Godzilla movies.
