TV Review: "Euphoria"

Zendaya stars in the 2019 HBO drama series "Euphoria".

We've all seen those classic coming-of-age movies such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Clueless, that portray the lives and often relatable experiences of teens growing up and trying to fit in with the world around them. But I personally don't think that I have ever seen a coming-of-age story quite like HBO's recent series "Euphoria".

This stirring dramatic TV series follows Rue (Zendaya), a struggling teenager and drug addict fresh from rehab, who tries to find meaning and purpose in her life as she braves her last year in high school and forms a relationship with the spontaneous, free-spirited Jules (Hunter Schafer). The show also explores the lives of high schoolers and unique characters who are connected to Rue, and audiences get to see from their eyes and point of view and follow them on their own individual journeys of self-discovery.

"Euphoria" is a bold, brave show. It tackles tough, real-world topics including addiction and the dangers of social media, and stresses the importance of mental health and body positivity. It's not an easy watch at times, but nonetheless "Euphoria" is a relevant, captivating, emotional, and powerfully resonant experience with stunning performances from Zendaya and Schafer, outstanding cinematography, and excellent writing and direction from Sam Levinson.

"Euphoria" season 1, as well as its two recent special episodes, are available to watch on HBO Max, and other streaming services now. Go experience it!
