TOP 10

Top 10 Comic Book Movies

Ever since I was a kid, I've always been the biggest fan of comic-book movies.  Being able to see some of my favorite heroes on the big screen is always such a delight, and it's always exciting to experience new characters and stories too!  Here is a list of my top 10 recommended page-to-screen adaptations!

"Kingsman: The Secret Service"

This action film, based on the comic book by Mark Millar, stars Colin Firth as Harry Hart codename Galahad, a leading agent of a secret society of ultra-suave professional spies who protect the world.  Galahad recruits Eggsy (Taron Egerton), the son of his trusted partner who died in service, and mentors the street-smart, down-on-his-luck young man to become a Kingsman agent.  "The Secret Service" is such an entertaining movie, and its exhilarating, over-the-top action, witty humor and engaging performances all add up to a refreshing, thrilling experience.

"Doctor Strange"

Benedict Cumberbatch plays Stephen Strange, a successful but arrogant NYC neurosurgeon whose life is changed forever when a fatal car accident renders his hands paralyzed.  Seeking a cure that modern medicine was unable to provide, Stephen encounters the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a mysterious and powerful spiritual sorcerer, who helps him discover his true purpose and trains him in the mystical arts, opening his mind to a beautiful but dangerous new world of magic, alternate dimensions and otherwordly entities.  This is one of my favorite Marvel films.  It's bold, visually stunning, funny and exciting, and Cumberbatch gives an awesome performance as the titular hero.  Take the trip, you won't regret it!

"Guardians of the Galaxy"

James Gunn directs this brilliant adaptation of the popular Marvel comic, starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a Star Lord, a thrill-seeking criminal who reluctantly joins a group of misfit outlaws to stop a power-hungry megalomaniac from unleashing a devastating new weapon on the cosmos.  Boasting a talented cast, memorable characters (Groot and Rocket Raccoon are a delight) and plenty of heart and humor, this space odyssey is just so much fun.

"Spider-Man: Far From Home"

This sequel to "Spider-Man: Homecoming" follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he falls in love, meets new friends and allies, and discovers a dangerous new threat, all while on a European school vacation.  Holland continues to prove his worth as the teenage web-slinger, and gives a delightful and equally moving performance, and Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Samuel L. Jackson provide great supporting performances as well.  "Far From Home" easily exceeded my already high expectations.  I love how director Jon Watts was able to find the perfect balance between a John Hughes-esque coming-of-age comedy and an action-packed, constantly surprising superhero movie.  Don't miss this one!

06

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"

I can quote this film from beginning to end and if that doesn't tell you how much I love this movie, I don't know what else to say.  This 2010 comic-book comedy centers on the titular character (Michael Cera), an awkward loner and bass guitarist who falls in love with the quirky, beautiful Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and discovers that he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to win her affection.  I am a huge fan of Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz", "Shaun of the Dead") and he directed this adaptation brilliantly and with his own unique flair.  "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" features an amazing soundtrack, energetic action sequences, fun performances and outstanding visual effects.  It's a massively entertaining comedy and cult classic masterpiece that demands and deserves to be seen!

"Wonder Woman"

This movie is just wonderful.  Yes, that was an intentional pun.  No, I do not regret it.  This 2017 DC blockbuster finally brought the origin story of the Amazonian princess and warrior to the big screen.  In the film, Diana begins a journey of discovery from the island of Themyscira to London, England, where she helps WWI pilot Steve Trevor uncover a massive threat to the world from the God of War himself, Ares.  Patty Jenkins delivered a fantastic film here, and there's a lot to love: breathtaking cinematography, thrilling action (the "No Man's Land" sequence is incredible), and a great cast, led by actress Gal Gadot, who shines as the titular heroine.  It's a superhero epic that is well worth experiencing.

04

"Black Panther"

This film is a masterpiece that is unmatched.  This is the story of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), a warrior from the hidden, technologically advanced civilization of Wakanda, who protects the world as the Black Panther.  As T'Challa approaches his new position as heir to the throne, he is met by a mysterious rival, Kilmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who has a connection to T'Challa's bloodline.  Demanding the throne, Kilmonger threatens to use Wakanda's resources to throw the world into chaos, and T'Challa learns that he must rise to the challenge and defend Wakanda and the world.  "Black Panther" is both a rich, cultural experience and a rousing superhero movie with relevant and powerful messages.  The late Chadwick Boseman (who passed away just this year) gives a deeply moving and outstanding performance as T'Challa, and Michael B. Jordan provides unexpected depth, emotion and complexity to his role as Kilmonger, who is easily one of the most fascinating character studies in the entire MCU.

Ryan Coogler ("Creed") directed one powerhouse of a film.  Go check it out!

03

"Logan"

Hugh Jackman returns in this 2017 film, for his last appearance as the Wolverine.  Set years into the distant future, mutantkind is near extinction, and Logan's regenerative powers are weakening.  Growing old and tired, the aging mutant lives in the desert, and tends to Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), the elderly former leader of the X-Men, who is near-death.  Logan's life under the rader is upended when a fugitive woman seeks his help to transport her daughter Laura across the border to safety.  He soon discovers that he shares an unusual connection with the young girl, and that he must protect her from evil forces that are trying to hunt her down.  Logan soon discovers that this may be the hardest journey of his life.  This film is very unique; it's no superhero movie.  This is a gritty, devastating and emotional neo-Western drama, about a seemingly immortal man who must face mortality and the inevitability of time.  Hugh Jackman's performance is the best of his career, and newcomer Dafne Keen gives a tremendous and powerful performance alongside him.  I love this film very much, and it is a truly unforgettable work of cinema.

"Avengers: Endgame"

Of course I had to make sure this was on the list, and it certainly deserves its place.  "Endgame" is easily one of the biggest and most monumentous comic-book films ever made.  Following the catastrophic events of "Infinity War", half the world has been wiped from existance, and the remaining Avengers must figure out a new strategy to bring back their allies and undo the damage that the mad titan Thanos has wrought on the earth with the Infinity Gauntlet.  This movie is grand in its scale, and it is an emotional and captivating story that manages to effortlessly weave the complicated arcs of each hero into one epic adventure.  It is the culmination of everything since the very beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the final showdown between the Avengers and Thanos is truly one of the greatest and most defining moments in cinematic history.  If you're a comic-book fan, then this is an absolute must-see.

01

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

I bet you're surprised this is my #1 choice, but "The Winter Soldier" easily tops my list and is my favorite comic-book film.  What makes this film special and unique is that it doesn't feel like a superhero movie; it's surprisingly well-grounded in reality and present some interesting real-world topics.  This sequel to "The First Avenger" follows Captain Steve Rogers as he adjusts to the new and rapidly changing modern world around him.  When Steve discovers a dangerous mole in the top-secret organization that he works for, he begins to question his alliances, and goes rogue to uncover a massive conspiracy involving a mysterious assassin known as the Winter Soldier, who shares a familiar past to the star-spangled hero.  This sequel is more of a political action thriller than anything, and I think that's what makes it so original and outstanding.  It certainly outdoes its predecessor in every single way, providing a sharp script, explosive action and thrills, terrific performances and memorable new characters.  "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is an amazing, pulse-pounding rollercoaster ride and a brilliant entry in the genre!

Hope you all enjoyed reading!  Have a super day!
