TV Review: "The Haunting of Hill House"

Updated: Apr 22, 2021

Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson, this acclaimed Netflix miniseries centers on the Crain family, who moves into the titular manor, which harbors mysterious and deadly secrets. Switching between different timelines, the show focuses on the Crain children, who begin to witness their family being torn apart by supernatural forces, and in their adulthood they deal with an unexpected death, forcing them to confront the past and their own personal demons.

"The Haunting of Hill House" is so much more than just a scary TV show. While it certainly has its share of creepy thrills and ominous, slow-burn suspense and terror, it is first and foremost a story about family, about dealing with death, grief, guilt and loss, and the importance of undying love and loyalty. From the very beginning of the story, we see the relationships between each family member and watch how their relationships develop through the years. We get to see through the eyes of each of the Crains and experience their personal struggles in overcoming their fears and failures and rebuilding their life again.

There is so much to love about this show. The writing is superb, the production design, costume/makeup design and the cinematography are gorgeous, but what defines "The Haunting of Hill House" are the incredible performances from the ensemble cast. The biggest highlight is the wonderfully talented Victoria Pedretti, whose acting debut in this show is without a doubt one of the most powerfully resonant and beautiful performances that I have ever seen on television. Writer/director Mike Flanagan ("Oculus", "Doctor Sleep") crafts a beautiful and unforgettable ghost story, taking his viewers on an emotional journey into the unknown and making sure that what remains in the midst of the terror and darkness is a living, beating human heart. I think the best word to describe it is in the title itself: "haunting". I was terrified and brought to tears, and the story has remained resonant in my mind to this day. I will not soon forget this fantastic series, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to take the trip!

Rating: 5/5
