In 2001, video game developer Bungie teamed with Microsoft and delivered one of the greatest and influential video games of all time, a science-fiction first-person shooter called "Halo: Combat Evolved". The creation of this influential title led to a massively successful franchise, one that has lived on through its countless spinoff, prequel and sequel games, as well as novels, comics, and even TV shows.
"Combat Evolved" sets in the distant future, as the United Nations Space Command, upon discovery of a mysterious ring-world, falls under attack from an alien race of powerful enemies known as the Covenant. In this story, you as the player step into the armor of supersoldier Spartan 117 a.k.a Master Chief, and your job is to take the fight to the Covenant. With your AI guide and companion Cortana, you discover the truth of the ring-world known as "Halo" and discover that your enemies plan to use it to wipe out all of humanity. The future is in your hands.
"Halo" is one of my all-time favorite video games. It is so fun and entertaining to play solo and with friends. The campaign still holds up well to this day, and the storyline, mechanics, and graphics are all phenomenal. The multiplayer feature is a blast with so much to enjoy, including a Custom Games option where you can build your own game stages to play, as well as pre-designed stages such as Capture the Flag, SWAT, and King of the Hill, among others. I recently played through the entire campaign on its most difficult mode, Legendary, and while it can prove to be quite a difficult challenge, it is a remarkable and satisfying feat, one that can be greatly aided on Co-Op mode with a friend, and with lots of precision, skill and strategic gameplay.
The original, classic version of "Halo: Combat Evolved" is still being sold although it is rarer to find, however its Anniversary title provides a remastered version of the game, which was released in 2011. This remastered version is also in "The Master Chief Collection", a compilation of Halo 1-4 and its prequels, Reach and ODST, which are all available to own on the Xbox One and on Steam. It is also available to rent in the LARC Media and Gaming Lab for you to play and enjoy!
