"I'm the Dude, man. So that's what you call me."
In this 1998 comedy, acclaimed directors Joel and Ethan Coen introduce us to the Dude (Jeff Bridges), a calm and collected stoner who regularly hangs out in the bowling alley with his two buddies, the no-nonsense Walter (John Goodman) and the clueless Donny (Steve Buscemi). The Dude, himself an umemployed man, believes in taking it easy in life. But one night turns his peaceful lifestyle upside down, when he is attacked by two thugs who mistake him to be an individual known as "Lebowski", and desecrate his beloved rug.
The Dude, wishing to take matters into his own hands, asks for compensation from the real Lebowski (David Huddleston), who later recruits him to collect the ransom of his kidnapped wife. The slacker, who seeks help from his bowling pals Walter and Donny, find themselves deep in a dangerous, unpredictable, crime-riddled quest to collect the money, but they realize that their routine, carefree lives are at stake.
I'm glad I finally got the opportunity to check out this quirky cult classic. This is such an absurd, creative, and hilarious film. The script, written by the directors, is sharp and witty, and the cinematography from veteran Roger Deakins is outstanding, but what really shines in the movie is the performances. Jeff Bridges gives one of the best comedic performances that I've ever seen on film, and I can see how the Dude has been cemented as an iconic movie character. Goodman and Buscemi are also phenomenal and provide excellent support in their roles.
