This remarkable film tells the incredible and inspiring true story of Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) a young Harvard graduate and lawyer who moves to Alabama to serve as a defense lawyer for prisoners in need of representation. Stevenson meets Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), a man who was falsely accused and imprisoned on death row after the murder of a young girl. Even in the midst of a racially discriminatory town and community and despite the overwhelming odds against him, Bryan fights to change the flawed justice system and clear Walter's name.
"Just Mercy" is one of the best films I have ever seen, and I think everyone needs to see this. It's a relevant, powerful testament to the prevailing human spirit and a moving, important story that reminds us all to be brave and stand up for those in need and those whose voice cannot be heard. Director Destin Daniel Cretton ("Short Term 12", "The Glass Castle") helms this biographical drama with masterful ease and grace, and Jordan and Foxx both give phenomenal performances in their roles.
Bryan Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative in 1989 to offer legal assistance to those in need, and to support and represent prisoners who have been unjustly accused and not given a proper trial. For more information, go to https://eji.org/.
I encourage you all to experience this film, it is truly unforgettable. Bryan Stevenson's memoir "Just Mercy" is available to check out today at the LARC, and the film is available on HBOMax and other streaming platforms.
