Film Review: "Sonic the Hedgehog"

Ben Schwartz voices the titular hero in 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog".

It's not easy being a speedster. It's hard when you're just trying to live your life and some nefarious megalomaniac is trying to steal your powers and conquer the world. Just ask Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz). Life's been super lonely for the little blue alien, after he was forced to retreat from his home planet to Earth. After accidentally attracting attention from the U.S. government, however, he forms an unexpected alliance with small-town cop Tom Wachowski (James Marsters). On the run and pursued by the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), Sonic sets out to return to his home, but discovers his inner hero in the process as he risks everything to protect this new world from Robotnik's sinister intentions.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" is an entertaining film that has a little something for everyone. Sonic looks great and the animation redesign was fantastic. Ben Schwartz gives a delightful voice performance as the iconic video game character, and Jim Carrey is a real treat to see back on the big screen. His performance as the antagonistic Robotnik, with his expressive comedic physicality, really showcases why he is one of the funniest actors in Hollywood to this day. While the story is predictable and the humor runs a bit flat at times, there is still a lot of charm to this film, with vibrant visuals and action, as well as entertaining, energetic performances. "Sonic" is a fast-paced, enjoyable video game-to-film adaptation that is fun for the whole family.
