Acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón's 2018 drama "Roma" is without a doubt one of the most incredible films that I have ever seen. It feels so intimate and so personal. And I suppose that's the point, as the director had stated that he had based this film on his own experiences as a child growing up.
"Roma" sets in Mexico City and centers on Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a hard-working live-in maid for a wealthy family. The story follows her as she helps the family cope with a devastating discovery, and follows her in her own discovery, as she learns that she is pregnant.
It's a very simple story, but the way that Cuarón tells it is profound and immensely moving. This story is a beautiful cultural reflection, and a reflection of humanity. The performances feel so natural, like we are watching a documentary in real-time. The scale of the film is massive and it is shot beautifully in real locations in Mexico. Aparicio is without a doubt the heart of "Roma", and her performance is quiet yet deeply powerful. She absolutely owns every moment onscreen, and she truly makes you care so much about Cleo and her well-being. This Academy Award-winning film was written, directed, edited and shot by Alfonso Cuarón, and it is such a beautiful and captivating cinematic experience, one that I would highly recommend.
I encourage you all to continue to explore and experience international cinema from different cultures and countries! There are so many diverse, wonderful movies and stories from around the world that are being shared, just like this one! Don't be afraid of subtitles! As director Bong Joon Ho stated in his memorable Oscar speech this year: "Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films."
"Roma" was recently introduced into the Criterion Collection, and is available to rent at the LARC Media and Gaming Lab, and it also on DVD/Bluray to own and on Netflix! Check out this fantastic film today!
