Film Review: Ready or Not

Samara Weaving stars as Grace in 2019's "Ready or Not".

What I thought looked like a predictable, low-budget horror flick turned out to be something entirely different. "Ready or Not", which was released to theatres on August 21st, was a refreshing reminder that this genre isn't dead yet, and it still has plenty of clever tricks up its sleeve.

This story focuses on Grace (Samara Weaving), who, on her wedding night and upon the request of her husband and new in-laws, takes part in a traditional game of hide and seek. However, Grace quickly finds out that this is not just any ordinary game and that this game has far more deadlier consequences than she could ever imagine.

I don't want to reveal too much about what happens, but all I can say is expect the unexpected. The ensemble cast is exceptional, but the real star of the show is up-and-coming actress Samara Weaving (cousin of famous actor Hugo Weaving), who gives one of the most surprising and fascinating performances of the year. Grace's development from cheerful bride to hardened, resourceful survivor is captivating to watch, and Weaving nails every line of dialogue, every expression and every action of her character with gusto and conviction. I am eager to see more from her in future films; one of which is the upcoming 2020 sequel "Bill and Ted Face the Music", starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter.

Another huge highlight of "Ready or Not" is the fantastic script, which delivers plenty of unexpected wit and humor as well as its tension, scares, and genuinely shocking moments. It's a unique mashup that takes elements from films such as "Get Out" and "The Purge" and creates something fresh and exciting to watch. Die-hard fans of the horror/thriller genre will find plenty to love here.

Fox Searchlight and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett ("V/H/S", "Southbound") have delivered an original, twisted, darkly comedic horror story that is destined for cult classic status. It's quite a ride, if you've got the guts for it. Check it out in theatres now before it's too late!
