Film Review: Pride & Prejudice

Writer's picture: Connor QuigleyConnor Quigley

Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in 2005's "Pride & Prejudice".

I am typically very picky about period pieces in cinema. While I do respect them, there aren't very many period pieces or classical literature adaptations that I have enjoyed onscreen.

"Pride & Prejudice" is a rare exception. This 2005 film by director Joe Wright ("Atonement", "Darkest Hour"), based on the classic novel from Jane Austen, is a lovely film to behold.

The film essentially retells the story of the independent Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) who faces pressure from her family to marry. While refusing the possibility, Elizabeth encounters a mysterious, soft-spoken upper-class gentleman named Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) and something unusual stirs in her heart. And while her more outgoing nature clashes with his more reserved personality, Elizabeth begins to wonder if finding true love is a possibility.

The entire ensemble cast is phenomenal, in particular Knightley, who absolutely shines as Elizabeth, along with Macfadyen, who gives a convincing and effective portrayal of our heroine's inevitable lover. The camerawork and cinematography are both stunning, and the musical score by Dario Marianelli adds a tranquil, beautiful accompaniment to the engaging story.

Overall, "Pride & Prejudice" is just a lovely work of cinema and a faithful adaptation that I thoroughly fell in love with, and I am sure you will too.
