Film Review: "Once"

Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard in the 2007 musical drama "Once".

"Once" sets in modern-day Dublin, Ireland, where we follow a street performer (Glen Hansard) and the growing relationship he shares with a Czech florist (Marketa Irglova). Throughout the story, they set out to follow their dreams and create music together, and they begin to fall in love with one another. Yet every song has its final note, and their budding romance begins to be challenged.

This film tells a simple story, but it has profound effect. Like a catchy tune, "Once" sings a memorable, resonant song that lasted long with me after the credits rolled. It is a charming and lively tale of love and hope. Hansard and Irglova (both real-life musicians) have excellent chemistry with each other and are immensely talented. Director John Carney ("Begin Again", "Sing Street") has a true gift of telling cinematic stories that feel so raw and real, like we are simply right there beside the main characters and experiencing their journey with them. "Once" is no exception to that. This film was highly acclaimed, won the Academy Award for Best Song with "Falling Slowly" and its soundtrack was even nominated for an Emmy! In 2012, "Once" received the Broadway treatment as it was adapted on stage and became a massive success. And all of that was thanks to this film, which may have had a low budget and a simple story, but it had an even bigger, beating heart and a beautiful voice to behold.

I would highly recommend checking out this film!
