Film Review: "Interstellar"

Writer's picture: Connor QuigleyConnor Quigley

Matthew McConaughey stars in the 2014 sci-fi drama "Interstellar".

Writer/director Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight" trilogy, "Inception) sets his sights on the cosmos in this cinematic space odyssey. "Interstellar" sets in the distant future, where thousands of people have died, resources and food are becoming drastically scarce and massive dust storms plague the earth. Former astronaut Cooper (McConaughey) is recruited by NASA to find another suitable planet for the remains of humanity to survive on. Discovering a mysterious wormhole in space, Cooper, along with his crew, including Brand (Anne Hathaway), Doyle (Wes Bentley), and two intelligent robots named TARS and CASE, explore a strange new galaxy to find a new home for the people of Earth. Facing unimaginable danger, Cooper finds himself stricken with guilt and fear after promising his young daughter Murph that he would return, as he learns that with every hour spent, 7 years pass on Earth, and his remaining family inches closer and closer to death. The astronauts risk everything and race against time to protect the future of humanity.

"Interstellar" is a remarkable film, and I distinctly remember seeing it in 70MM IMAX format when it was released in theatres in 2014. It was such a jaw-dropping and beautiful experience, and it has continued to impress and astonish me with every viewing since. The cast is amazing, and McConaughey delivers what I believe is his best performance to date. Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway provide fantastic support as well, as does Jessica Chastain, who plays Cooper's grown daughter. The story is exciting, emotional and gripping, and the cinematography and visual/practical effects are stunning to behold. Legendary composer Hans Zimmer also provides a marvelous, memorable score that helps elevate the film to tremendous heights. Christopher Nolan balances just the right amount of sci-fi thrills and human drama to create a masterful and poignant story.

"Love is the one thing we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space. Maybe we should trust that, even if we can't understand it." This is a beautiful and important quote from "Interstellar" that best summarizes its moving and powerful message to its viewers: that love, and compassion, will always prevail.
