Film Review: "Game Night"

(left to right) Kylie Bunbury, Lamorne Morris, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Jason Bateman, and Rachel McAdams star in 2018's "Game Night".

This 2018 dark comedy is one of my personal favorites, and if you're looking for some great laughs, then look no further than "Game Night".

Max and Annie (Bateman and McAdams) are a young couple who meet and fall for each other through their love of competitive games. Years later, they are now married and host weekly game night events with their friends. However, one game night goes horribly wrong when Max's brash older brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) arrives and hosts an interactive murder mystery game, complete with clues and hired actors. When Brooks himself is abducted by a group of thugs, Max, Annie and friends think it's all part of the game, but soon realize throughout the course of one night that this may be the real deal, and get caught up in a web of crime and intrigue during their quest to save Brooks' life.

What makes "Game Night" so special and unique is the fantastic chemistry that is shared between Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, as well as its excellent script with plenty of humor, heart, and unexpected twists and surprises. This dark comedy also benefits from its stellar supporting cast, in particular Jesse Plemons, who plays Max and Annie's mysterious and weird neighbor Gary, a cop who is obsessed with joining in on their festivities.

Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (known for writing films such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs", "Vacation", and "Spider-Man: Homecoming", among others) craft a delightfully entertaining and hilarious comedy thriller that is indeed a great time at the movies. Check it out on DVD and Blu-ray today!
