Film Review: "Frozen 2"

Writer's picture: Connor QuigleyConnor Quigley

Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel) in "Frozen 2".

I watched this second installment pretty late (only a month ago when it was released on Disney+), mainly because I heard mixed reviews online and also because I wasn't a huge fan of the first film. But I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed "Frozen 2" and that it exceeded my expectations and then some.

In this sequel, Elsa (Idina Menzel) hears a mysterious voice beckon her and, together with her loyal sister Anna (Kristen Bell), the woodsman Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and his reindeer Sven, and Olaf the snowman (Josh Gad), she sets out into the unknown lands beyond the kingdom, where she uncovers the secrets of her past and discovers her true destiny.

I loved this movie, a lot more than its predecessor. The story and world-building was fascinating, and the development of the characters was phenomenal. The animation was jaw-dropping and gorgeous, the voice cast is very talented, and the music was memorable. "Frozen 2" is filled with humor and exciting sequences (Elsa attempting to traverse the sea on foot with her powers is one of the biggest highlights), but it also contains so much emotional depth and meaning, which is one of the main reasons this film resonated with me. While I was expecting this to be mainly a story of Elsa learning about the origins of her powers, it is also a story of letting go (pun not intended) as Anna, who fears isolation and fears for her sister's safety, learns to accept the things she cannot change and be brave for herself and her loved ones.

"Frozen 2" is a delightfully entertaining and genuinely moving animated tale, and I highly recommend checking it out! It's on Disney+, digital platforms, and DVD/Blu-ray right now!
