Kaya Scodelario stars in "Crawl".

Even the simplest ideas, if executed well, can be great. This is definitely the case for director Alexandre Aja's 2019 thriller "Crawl". This film focuses on Haley (Kaya Scodelario), an aspiring swimmer who sets out to find her missing father (Barry Pepper) during a threatening hurricane in Florida. But after their reunion, Haley and her father soon discover that the storm is the least of their worries, as they become the targets of a group of merciless and hungry alligators.

"Crawl" is a fast-paced and brutal thrill ride, and at a mere 87 minutes, Aja knows exactly how to keep the audience in his grip. There are some great scares and lots of tension and suspense, as well as lots of gore, and the visual effects of the alligators look great and are very detailed. Scodelario is phenomenal, and really carries the movie with her strong performance, and although I have only seen her in the recent "Maze Runner" franchise, I hope to see more of her in future films. The writing is a bit weak in parts, but overall if you know what you are going into, and come for a fun, intense monster movie, then you'll have a great time. I certainly did!
